I love this!!! So I’m a licensed mental health counselor and I’ve worked both as a mobile crisis clinician assessing at risk children to safety plan while they’re in crisis and as an outpatient counselor working with adults. The thing I’ve noticed that has caused a lot of anxiety and stress and depression in people is the lack of communication and socializing that occurs anymore face to face. Like you were mentioning, everyone hides behind a fake user name and can say whatever they want but they miss so much in communication. They become inadequate in understanding nonverbal communication and/or how to communicate and it leads to conflict or isolation. It’s getting worse and forums where actual conversations and not hiding behind a fake picture helps go back in the right direction of learning how to be human again and not a machine.
Your style of writing is so endearing and funny and this is a great reminder that the internet used to be above all else FUN. I remember booting up the computer in the "computer room" to "surf the internet" - a specific and time-limited activity which mostly consisted of scrolling on Tumblr and being so exhilarated by niche fashion content I would otherwise have zero access to from my small, southwestern border town. Hoping that your Substack continues to get the attention it deserves and inspires more of us to remember that the internet can be an unserious/inspiring/engaging destination when we need it to be. Personally, I'd love to hear more about your early days in New York just out of curiosity. Cheers
I loved this piece! its a lovely read with a funny yet nostalgic tone. I´ve listened to some podcast interviews of yours and find your carreer very interesting and love your point of view on culture. I created an account on substrack after seeing a story you posted, i had never heard of it before, and am glad I did! Looking forward to you next piece. (Also please dont correct my grammar english isnt my first language so youre and you´re might get mixed up over here hahah)
Witty with a capital W and by the end, I was genuinely wondering if Substack lets you subscribe twice. Consider me a fan, a follower, and potentially a full-blown liability in the comments… From one Midwestern fashion obsessive to another, I’d love to hear more about your YouTube era. It’s giving dream job energy (minus the tech bro hoodie).
Pop fizz clink .. cheers to you for your ardent candor, good grammar and pun-filled banter!
Maybe a story of tiny details or short snippets from beginning to end of getting invited to an event and attending it ..was it a printed invite? Where were you when you opened it? Were you in a fun mood? Who invited you? How did you decide what to wear? How did you travel there? Who did you sit next to - was it assigned ? Most fun moment? Most saber-tooth tiger moment? You get the idea .. a peak behind the curtain of a glam experience !
The art world is so much different now than it was when I started working in it. For one thing, no galleries were on social media. NFTs hadn’t been invented!
That’s true and I feel like it’s open the art world to collaborate more with culture at large - fashion, music, design, literature, etc!! I’m excited 😆
And thank you for the trip down memory lane, how I miss those years. But life goes on, we don’t stop moving, just happy you are here along for the ride so we can laugh a little more! ♥️
Read every single word! Here for the dad jokes, the nostalgia (“fashion bloggers” at fashion week! The Valencia filter!), and the Pretty Woman reference.
PS - we love the screenshot at the top of the post. And by we, I mean me 😂 xoxo

There are moments when I’m wistful and nostalgic for Tumblr, too! Here’s hoping we can make a safe space for fun 🤍
So happy to see you here, Derek! I loved your book “Classy” as a teen. I’d love to see you revisit it today and note what advice has held up!

I loved my YouTube chapter. Maybe I’ll do a newsletter devoted to the creator tips I learned when I worked there?
